A Woman In UK Order a Ring Worth $800,000 and She Thought It Was Costume Jewelry

TimeOdd Stories - Diamond Ring

Diamond Ring worth over $800,000

In the 1980s, a woman in the UK admired a pile of costume jewlery at a yard sale, before picking out a pretty ring. Even though it was notably dull, she paid about $13 for it and excitedly slipped it on her finger. Fast forward to 2017 when Sotheby’s announced that the “costume” ring she’s been wearing for 30 years is actually a real diamond worth over $800,000.

Thanks to the advice of a jeweler, who suggested she get the ring appraised, the woman from Isleworth, West London just cashed in on her small purchase, and according to Business Insider, she received £656,750 from the sale.

Tenner, the diamond’s new name, is a 26-carat, cushion-shaped white diamond from the 19th century.

“Anyone would be [excited] in this position, it’s a life-changing amount of money,” Jessica Wyndham, Head of the Sotheby’s London jewelery department, told the Evening Standard. “No matter what your background is or what your past experiences have been, it’s going to revolutionize someone’s life.”

Wyndham attributes Tenner’s dull appearance to the old style of diamond cutting, that focused on saving more of the weight and less on brilliance.

The owner made even more on the rock than even Sotheby’s expected. The ring’s estimated value was estimated to be between £ 250,000-350,000 and sold for almost twice that amount at auction.
