'Saturday Night Live' host Tiffany Haddish owned her opening monologue

Saturday Night time Live guest host Tiffany Haddish kicked off her night with an uproarious opening monologue that touched on the news of the day (Trump and other awful guys), her wardrobe (she’s very passionate about her Alexander McQueen dress), and her hit summer months 2017 comedy, Ladies Trip.

Fewer humorous was the context all around her hosting gig.

“Can you imagine I will be the incredibly #very first black female comic host?!?”

Technically, Maya Rudolph — also a comedian — conquer Haddish to the punch in this article when she hosted in 2012, but Rudolph is also a former cast member. Even reducing out the “comedian” aspect of that equation, we’re still left with a pretty compact record across more than 830 episodes.

Such as Haddish and Rudolph, 12 black ladies have hosted SNL to date: Gabourey Sidibe, Cicely Tyson, Oprah Winfrey, Halle Berry, Taraji P. Henson, Queen Latifah, Rosario Dawson, Janet Jackson, Octavia Spencer, and Kerry Washington, additionally Haddish and Rudolph.

Yay progress and all — truly, Haddish owned that phase — but it would be good to see SNL get to a stage in which the audience can get psyched about the visitor host purely because of their expertise, without having the included baggage of data like this.
