Nest Cam IQ with 4K footage and Facial Recognition

The 4K Nest camera that was rumored earlier this month has been made official today. It’s called Nest Cam IQ, and the “IQ” in the name stems from its facial recognition capabilities.

This is an indoor security camera that can tell things apart from humans, but also has the ability to keep track of familiar faces, easily detecting strangers in your home. Thus, when it sends you an alert, it can tell you exactly who it saw, not just that it identified that it’s a person.

The camera has a 4K sensor and 130-degree field of view. As rumored, you won’t get 4K footage – instead HDR is used to combine “staggered 4K images” into “one beautifully balanced 1080p HD picture that won’t choke your connection”. The video is encrypted and the bitrate is auto-adjusted.

When the Nest Cam IQ sees a person, it can automatically zoom in and follow that individual while he or she walks across the room, at the same time also keeping the full 130-degree picture in view. You can manually digitally zoom up to 12x on any specific area. It has intelligent audio alerts too, notifying you when it hears the sound of a dog or a person’s voice, for example.

The device has three microphones and a “high-end” speaker, noise suppression, and echo cancellation. At some point later this year it will be full duplex, so you’ll be able to communicate with your family through the Nest Cam IQ.

The new camera is now up for pre-order in Nest’s online store, priced at $299 for a single unit, and $498 for a two-pack. It’s set to start shipping in 4 to 5 weeks.
