How Much It Really Cost to be Wedding Guest

TimeOdd Stories - Wedding Guest

Getting Ready For Big Wedding Bill

Getting a wedding invitation is kind of similar to receiving a bill in the mail. Okay, not to be super pessimistic — it’s a celebration of love, blah, blah, blah — but being a wedding guest is a serious financial undertaking! There’s the gift, the outfit, the travel, and all the events leading up to the actual wedding itself. We all know weddings aren’t cheap to plan, but they aren’t cheap to attend either.

As part of their Wedding Guest Study, experts at The Knot surveyed over 1,000 people who attended weddings in the last three years to find out exactly how much they spent on the festivities. No surprises here: every invite comes with a price tag. But the average amount is pretty shocking.

Here’s the breakdown of just how much attending a wedding will set you back.

Bridesmaids and groomsmen spend on average: $1,154

On the gift: $177
On the outfit: $207
On travel: $342
On accommodations: $293

Average wedding guest spends on average: $888

On the gift: $118
On the outfit: $81
On travel: $321
On accommodations: $32

That doesn’t even factor in any pre-wedding events! If you attend the bachelorette party, for instance, you’ll spend around $472 or $1,106 if it involves destination travel. Bachelor parties cost way more, setting you back around $738 and a whopping $1,532 if you travel.

That said, there are plenty of ways to save on wedding costs, from wearing a vintage dress to setting an alert for cheap flights. You just have to get crafty…and make sure to bring home enough cake to get your money’s worth.
